Astral Projection and Lucid Dreams

Astral Projection, or "out of body experiences"(otherwise known as OBEs) is the spirit or consciousness being able to exit the physical body temporarily. In this state, the spiritual being is able to travel to anyplace he desires including any area on earth or in the physical universe--possibly even other universes. While the spiritual being is experiencing an OBE, his body safely remains in bed or perhaps sitting in a chair. No harm will come to the physical body if it is left in a safe place. When the being desires to return to the body, all he has to do is make the decision to return and the deed is done. Often the return to the physical body is spontaneous and happens without the being even willing it to happen. Some people claim to see a silver cord extending from the physical body to themselves as spirits or consciousness. Others claim to see no cord at all. It probably depends on how secure the being feels being out of body and about his ability to return to the body at will as to whether or not he perceives a silver cord attachment. There are different kinds of out of body experiences. In one kind of out of body experience, the being is pretty much earth bound. He can visit various places on earth and everything looks and feels pretty much like one's normal earth experience. However, in this area, the being may experience slight changes in that minor things might be just a little different such as a sidewalk originally curving to the right, astrally might curve to the left. Colors often take on a brighter aspect so that an old faded gold couch might look bright and glowingly gold or an old pair of faded purple slacks might look like the richest, brightest velvety purple. If one encounters other beings, they will appear to be normal human beings. One might also experience the ability to float rather than walk and one might be able to go through doors without opening them or go through walls. One might also be able to see through solid walls. Or one might be able to fly. In some cases, when the being has an out of body experience, he might discover that he is confined to a particular area such as the interior of a house and he cannot leave that area. Usually, it does not occur to the being to try to leave and it isn't until he returns to his body that he realizes that he was confined. Eyesight also is improved when one is having an OBE. People who normally wear glasses find while Out of body that there is no need for any kind of eyewear as one's perception is perfect in that state. Other areas that can be visited during OBE's can be in areas other than planet earth. They can take place in other realms which could be considered imaginary to those who have not had the experience. Some travelers report the existence of entities who are guides or helpers and some who are simply malevolent. It has been reported by some that there are areas on the astral plane where those who have passed on are unknowingly trapped due to their beliefs of what the afterlife is. If they believe in a heaven where only Christians live or particular sects of Christianity, then that is exactly what they unconsciously end up co-creating never realizing that they are trapped in an artificial existence. If a being believes that he or she has been evil in life and deserves to be punished by going to hell, then that is exactly what he or she will co-create with others who have similar beliefs and will remain there for eternity or until those who call themselves "helpers" come to deliver them from that existence so they can continue on to whatever follows in the afterlife. Time generally does not exist in the astral areas or planes (where one goes to when out of body). One is able to travel to the past or to the future or remain in present time. If in the physical body one decides to meet another being astrally at a particular time, it might end up that although the two beings meet at the appointed time astrally, physically one might have left his body hours earlier than the other and yet, the astral meeting appears to have taken place minutes after each has left his body. OBEs can happen spontaneously or they can be deliberately induced. The spontaneous ones generally happen during times of illness or during near death experiences. They also happen in the dream state and are often mistakenly called lucid dreams. Astral projection experiences can be induced with drugs or they can be induced at will. This last option does take training for most people. In some spiritual development circles, the ability to leave one's body at will becomes a prerequisite for advancement to higher levels. There have been numerous methods that claim to induce out of body experiences. These methods work for some but not for others. The latest method that appears to be to induce the out of body experience is by listening to bineural beats. This method, called Hemisync, was pioneered by the late Robert Monroe and one can experience this method by visiting the Monroe Institute in Virginia or by buying their Gateway CDs. Another technique similar to Monroe's Hemisync is called Holosync which some claim to be even more effective. One can induce OBEs simply by intention. This method may or may not work. It just depends on the person and how much intention he or she might have. The method is very simple. First one must make sure that one has a quiet area where one will not be disturbed by visitors, phones, etc. Then, One makes the decision that he or she wants to astral project or have OBEs. Then one methodically lies in bed for at least an hour at a particular time each day with the intention to go out of body. For the first few days it may appear that nothing is happening. One may grow weary of the effort and decide to just get up and forget all about it. However, it may happen that when one arises from bed, the physical body remains behind because one has finally achieved an OBE. It is possible to perceive one's "sleeping" body when one has an OBE. It is true that when one actually perceives one's physical body while he or she is in the astral state, that there will seem to be no strong connection to the body. The connection generaly is one of ownership in the same sense that one feels a connection of ownership to an article of clothing. If one has been involved in spiritual development circles where the physical body is held in contempt, then one may feel contempt for the physical body lying in bed while one is astral. At some point in one's OBE or astral experience, one might perceive the physical body lying in bed and yet another astral body possibly floating in the air above one while one is still in the out of body state. This second astral body will have no consciousness and although it obviously belongs to the being, there is no real feeling of connection to it. This second astral body could also just be another construct the being has unconsciously created. What does an OBE feel like? It depends. One could be lying in bed and suddenly there is a feeling of rising. If one tries to control this feeling of rising, the OBE will end suddenly. If one just relaxes and goes with the flow, the OBE may continue happening. There may be a feeling of spinning in a circle as the body is floating close to the ceiling. At this point, the OBE might end or it may continue and gradually one begins to gain control of the experience. What one might experience at this point is the ability to see in pitch darkness as it appears that one creates his own light when in the astral state. If one encounters other beings one will perceive that they too create their own light and are very visible in complete darkness. When one begins to encounter an OBE, one must be very careful not to allow physical consciousness to gain control because when this happens the OBE ends abruptly. However, after one has established the OBE state, one can then consciously control the experience and go where one wants. Questioning the state also will bring it to an abrupt end. It has been stated in various publications regarding the OBE state that lucid dreams are an entry way to having OBEs. Lucid dreams are interesting in that they differ from ordinary dreams due to their feeling of "realness" and that one can often "control" the dream. In the lucid dream state, the environment feels as real as the physical environment and thus causes the lucid dream's feeling of "realness". It might be more correct to consider that the lucid dream is in actuality, an OBE state. In a lucid dream one can do and experience exactly the same things one can do in an OBE state. It is just that the lucid dream is more spontaneous than an OBE and usually occurs when one is sleeping. What one must realize when in an astral or out of body state is that he or she is really no longer in the physical universe. Rather the being is now in the spiritual realm or universe. Although appearances might appear to be similar to the physical universe, it is not the physical universe. If one is in an out of body state and attempts in this state to write a note to oneself to read after he or she has returned to the body, one will find upon returning to the physical that the note does not exist. Although the paper appeared to be physical and the pen appeared to be physical, these were articles in the spiritual universe which is different from the physical. There are those who may have the ability to affect the physical universe but generally people in an astral state cannot have any influence on the physical.
